Perspective

I've been thinking about how cancer could happen to me.

Then I have to think about all the worse things that happen to other people, like when kids get cancer. This is an easy list to make and I won't belabor it here.

I've got to acknowledge that my getting cancer is not even in the top million worst things to have happened in the history of the world.

But it's the worst thing that's ever happened to me.

I think it's probably the worst thing that has happened to my wife and kids, too.

Sometimes perspective is not especially helpful.

Today was a good day. I took my IV, spent some time with my strep infected child, then went into the office for a couple of hours.

At 1:00, I went to St. Mary's for a CT scan for my radiation oncologist to use in planning my radiation. Evidently my weight loss means they have to recalculate the radiation measurements.

Happily - no barium swallow for today's CT scan, just the IV contrast.

No medical appointments tomorrow. Thursday I see Dr. Rowles. Friday I go back to radiation therapy for a dry run.

Sometimes it's easier to look at the steps right in front of you than to look too hard for perspective.

Hi Jimmy, I know how much you wish this was all a bad dream, but please keep in mind everyone goes through some type of battle that reminds them of their own strength and the strength of their families and loved ones. As for the hair, I would suggest to keep shaving, when the chemo is done your hair will grow back better than ever. Thanks for the CD, Ed & I are enjoying your music. Keep fighting the good fight.

I read once that "Perspective is a fine commodity but utterly useless when in the thick of things." How much easier to be an armchair quarterback than the person in the thick of things, whether in sport or battle, life or love?

It makes sense about looking at the step in front of you. Little victories might be easier if you don't get overwhelmed by focusing on it all at once. Maybe this 'one-step' way is the key to not getting overwhelmed by something so... well, overwhelming?

Your family is in my thoughts -

Hi there Jim Guy,
Just to give you a heads up, you're probably going to get some more comments on this post: Perspective. I found you when I was out looking for the latest info about man rashguards products, and even though this doesn't relate to man rashguards, I still had to stop and tell you that you're doing a great job. You're about to get some visits from my brother and sister. I told them about your blog so I hope you don't mind.

Howdy Jim Guy,
I'm impressed with what you wrote here in your Perspective post. I gave up my search for baby rash guard information and wanted to hang out here on your blog - well done. I might make a blog like yours about baby rash guard, but I wouldn't try to compete with you. You're doing a great job Jim Guy.
You got a great thing going... by friend.
